Acceptance sampling is a widely used technique for the inspection of incoming and outgoing product. Sampling standards, such as ANSI/ASQ Z 1.4 for inspection by attributes, are used to select sample sizes. The sampling standards are based around the concept of the AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit). It is important that the AQL is suitably established, and that the appropriate sample sizes are chosen so that correct decisions are made on the acceptance or rejection of lots. This course will provide detailed information on the correct procedures to be followed in choosing samples sizes.

What's covered?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse
  • Introduction to the statistics relevant to inspection by attributes and variables
  • Explanation of sampling inspection system terminology including; acceptance quality limit (AQL), inspection levels, attributes, variables, probability of acceptance, operating characteristic (OC), random sampling
  • The correct approach to determining the acceptance quality limit (AQL)
  • Identifying the appropriate inspection level and sample sizes in the sampling tables
  • Exercises in the use of the sampling tables selecting the appropriate sampling plans for inspection by attributes and variables. How the tables are used to decide on acceptance or rejection of a lot
  • How to correctly use the switching rules for optimum effectiveness

Most of the course time will be devoted to the standard for inspection by attributes, as this is the standard most commonly used in industry. However, examples from the standard for inspection by variables will also be studied, and the circumstances in which the standard for inspection by variables is used will be explained.

Who should participate?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse
  • Staff who have responsibility for selecting sample sizes for inspection of incoming or outgoing lots of product
  • Quality engineers and quality auditors
  • Quality assurance staff responsible for setting acceptable quality limits (AQL’s)

What will I learn?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

Participants achieve the following learning outcomes from the programme;

  • Select sampling sizes for inspection using the international sampling plans, such as ANSI/ASQZ1.4, ISO 2859, or BS 6001
  • Implement sampling procedures based on AQL’s
  • Demonstrate understanding of the switching rules and use of the normal, tightened and reduced sampling tables

Course Manual
Delegates will receive a very comprehensive course manual, which explains the statistics underlying sampling plans, describes in detail how the sampling tables for both attributes and variables are used, incorporates worked examples of selecting appropriate sampling plans for given AQL’s, and shows how the switching rules are correctly used. The manual will contain copies of the relevant tables from the current versions of ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 and the ANSI/ASQ Z 1.9 standards.
