 The Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 facilitates the selection of Safety Representatives to represent workers in the consultation process with employers. This three day course will familiarise participants with the role of the Safety Representative. At the end of the course delegates will be able to promote and maintain safety and health in the workplace and effectively represent fellow employees on health and safety issues.

The course content follows the recommendations in the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) Safety Representatives and Safety Consultations guidelines.

Day One

  • Health and Safety Promotion in the Workplace
  • Health and Safety legislation
  • The role and function of the Health and Safety Authority

Day Two

  • The contents of a Safety Statement
  • The role, rights, duties and responsibilities of the Safety Representative
  • Effective communication and participation in meetings
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment

Day Three

  • Fire hazards and fire prevention
  • Accident causation and prevention
  • Occupational health

The course includes problem-based learning and has a number of practical exercises.

Participants achieve the following learning outcomes from the programme;

  • Understand the role of the Safety Representatives.
  • Understand employers and employees and safety representatives’ responsibilities under the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005, the Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 and other applicable legislation.
  • Understand health and safety legislation.
  • Identify the contents of a Safety Statement.
  • Explain hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Understand how to investigate, report and prevent workplace accidents.
  • Understand the importance of consultation and communication.
