Climate change mitigation and adaptation together with the unfolding biodiversity catastrophe pose the biggest challenges facing our society. Adapting our businesses and industries to meet this challenge requires new ways of working and significant upskilling.

The IEMA Leading with Environmental Sustainability course offers a crucial 4.5-hour strategy session for business leaders who are responsible for defining their organisation’s longer term business strategy. IEMA has launched this initiative to support business leaders to re-think, re-position and drive a new approach to value creation through Environmental Sustainability.

The course will provide an opportunity to reflect on the organisation’s existing approach to

Environmental Sustainability and set a new strategy for resilience and growth in the short, mid and long-term.

On successful completion of this programme, learners will be able to:

  • Define Sustainability.
  • Define the organisation’s existing Environmental Sustainability strategy.
  • Identify where the organisation is on the Environmental Sustainability Continuum
  • Describe the strategic drivers for Sustainability.
  • Explain the opportunities for value creation through Sustainability.
  • Discuss Sustainability in the context of the organisation’s value chain.
  • Evaluate the organisation’s approach to Sustainability and identify areas for development.
  • Discuss the barriers to implementation of measures to improve the sustainable performance of the organisation.
  • Debate examples of good practice demonstrating leadership with regards to Sustainability.
  • Review an Environmental Sustainability strategy used by a pioneering organisation.
  • Understand the main pieces of environmental legislation that affect the organisation.
  • Understand the consequences of breaching environmental law.
  • Outline the first five things the organisation and the individual will do differently vis a vis sustainability.

The course is designed for senior management teams, executives, investors and board members across all sectors of business who are responsible for business strategy, as the course focuses on the strategic understanding of Sustainability and how it supports value creation in organisations.  There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
