The course addresses the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 and will incorporate examples of documented information required for ISO 14001. A practical delivery methodology will be applied. Additionally the course will highlight the differences between the current standard and its 2004 predecessor.

The course will also be of interest to companies who do not necessarily wish to move towards formal certification of their EMS but who wish to reduce their impact on the environment and incorporate best environmental practices.

Overview and introduction to environmental management
Requirements of ISO 14001:2015 & Annex SL
Overview of EMS terms and definitions
Understanding of organisational context and key stakeholders
Top management’s role in leadership i.e. what they can/can’t delegate
Dealing with significant environmental aspects/issues
Importance of environmental legislation and compliance evaluation
EMS policy and objectives and aligning these with strategic direction of company
Documented information i.e. what needs to be maintained and retained
Competence and communication and obtaining buy-in
EMS audit and review
Emergency preparedness and response
Role of third party auditors/certification bodies

This course will be of interest to managers/supervisors who are involved in the management of an EMS or have a leadership role in the environmental function, personnel considering implementing an EMS, those who require an overview of the changes to the standard and those in the organisation who wish to reduce their impact on the environment.

Participants achieve the following learning outcomes from the programme;

Understand the elements of an environmental management system such as ISO 14001:2015
Understand the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 and the structure of management system standards
Know the terms and definitions associated with an EMS
Evaluate the context of their organisation
Understand the changes made from ISO 14001:2004 to ISO 14001:2015
Have knowledge of the level of engagement needed from top management to implement, operate and maintain an EMS
Understand the level of resources needed for the operation of an EMS
Have an understanding of the level of documented information needed
Understand performance evaluation and corrective action and environmental management review
Appreciate the importance of EU and Irish environmental legislation
